Why do our natural minds need to be purged from dead works in order to serve the living God (Heb. 4:14) , and what are these dead works? Christians are much more sin-conscious and self-conscious, than Christ-conscious.  That does not have to be, in that through the Cross of Christ our consciousness is cleansed, there we need not have any more consciousness of sins (Heb. 10:1-2). So, why do we? We have the heart of Jesus, but because our minds are not renewed to the truth, we still think like the devil.  The consequence of man’s lost union with God has produced a separate satanic fear-based reality in us.  This reality came into being through man’s rebellion and fall.  To be free from this fear based thinking we must have our natural minds renewed to the truth of Who we are in Christ. “Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind” (rom. 12:1-2. The Spirit-mind of Christ will close all the gaps of separation and cleanse our blinked-consciousness from: “what is wrong to me, and why do I still sin every day,” to the clear free liberated mind of the Spirit (Ja.3:17). Then we will be free from laborious self-effort works to the ease of the Spirit working through us, naturally super-nationally.
